Restoran Tepi Sungai, Port Weld (Kuala Sepetang), Taiping

went all the way to Taiping from Ipoh on Malaysia Day...
it was not really a far distance but it took half and hour for us to reach our destination...
Port Weld, now known as Kuala Sepetang
i've never heard about Port Weld until daddy Kang told us about it...
let me share a little story about Port Weld:-
Port Weld, once the busiest port in the region, its facilities were mainly for exporting of processed tin ore. Opened in 1877 as the gateway for cargo ships, Port Weld is now called Kuala Sepetang. No longer a main port, it is now mainly used by fishing boats.
In the past, Port Weld was an important port for import export activities between Taiping and Penang, apart from Teluk Intan. Port Weld is also used as an exit point to the Kinta District and Upper Perak District. At that time, the items traded were opium, preserved vegetables, tobacco and tin ore.
Port Weld's activities with Taiping increased when a railroad was built. Works on the railroad started in the end of 1884 and its construction was managed by the Ceylon Pioneer Corps. On February, the railroad was officially opened and plying the Taiping and Port Weld route transported passengers and goods.

Kuala Sepetang is a coastal town located in Perak. The town was formerly known as Port Weld after a former Governor, Frederick Weld. It is a thriving fishing village, and the main jumping-off point to the river mouth community of Kuala Sangga, which is a Chinese fishing community at the river mouth which specializes in fish breeding in cages. The Port Weld railway station was located at the center of town. The whole railway line from here to Taiping, which was the first railway line in the Peninsular, is now dismantled, and only the ticketing booth and the Port Weld railway signboard remain. The ticketing booth is now a Chinese coffee shop, and the shop owner has been maintaining the railway signboard.
Kuala Sepetang has excellent seafood and it has a famous restaurant situated on the upper floor of a shop lot overlooking the river. Kuala Sepetang is also well known for its mangrove swamp reserve park which is open to the public daily. It has a boardwalk built over the swamp for tourists, and chalets in which tourists can rent to stay the night on the riverfront. (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuala_Sepetang)

i insisted to capture the picture of the Port Weld railway signboard...
apparently we went for the famous seafood...
keep the ticketing booth Chinese coffee shop and the mangrove swamp reserve park for next visit... ^^
the famous upper floor seafood restaurant - Restoran Tepi Sungai
Port Weld is a small town, where you can easily find your destination...
only there got very limited car parking space...
wanted to visit downstairs, but we decided not to because there was a tour bus arriving behind us...
all sort of seafood available
walked up from the narrow staircase...
this was what we saw before we were seated...
it was packed full with lunch crowd...
overlooking the river
i quickly took the chance to capture the overlooking river view while the rest were struggling for table...
can't get the best seat but we were there for the good seafood not the view~ XD
Umbra Juice with Sour Plum  沙梨酸梅
almost every table had the same drink...
no doubt, they served good pear juice... =)
Kangkung Belacan  马来风光
fresh vegetable with belacan...
nice! typical Chinese style Kangkung Belacan...
Gam Heong LaLa  甘香啦啦
although they are using the normal soft shell lala, but it was superb...
the lala was big and fresh~
and they made very good gam heong style too... nice!
Dry Asam Prawn  亚参虾
the prawns were so fresh~
only the asam style not really what i like...
i think it tasted a little funny, but the rest quite like it...
Steamed Fish  清蒸白仓
i like the traditional style steamed fish...
only with soy sauce and fried garlic oil, can really taste the freshness of the fish...
again, it was good! not fishy at all...
Steamed Flower Crab  清蒸花蟹
i don't fancy flower crab all this while~
but i must give credit to their flower crab...
i've never eaten any flower crab that with lots of crab meat in it...
the crab was so fresh that the meat was not stick to the shell at all...
they just steamed the crab with little egg white at the bottom...
auntie complained that it was too simple, but i think is only because it was simple and we can really taste the crab... ^^
Broiled Baby Octopus
this is the signature dish of Restoran Tepi Sungai...
too bad that we didn't get to try it...
it was only ready when we were leaving...
the owner of the restaurant is a very kind person...
he explained to me why it was not served earlier is because the process time for the baby octopus was not long enough and he wanted to make sure the quality of his signature dish...
so, he rather not selling it than spoil his good name...
never mind, keep it for next time~ many more dishes to be tried...
the old old petrol station
the old old petrol station was located opposite of Restoran Tepi Sungai...
it was really really old...
roadside snacks stall
we passed by in the car and saw people lining up in front of this stall...
so, we stopped and bought a few pieces to try...
Chinese Kuih with Prawns
this was what we bought... we bought 3 pieces for 4 sharing...
it was good and cheap...
all sort of Chinese Snacks
they served plenty of snacks...
but we were too full for all, only picked their hot item...

it was a nice short trip to Port Weld~
but it was too short that i didn't get a chance to know Port Weld better...
will definitely go back and spend longer time there to visit the reserve park and enjoy the simple lifestyle...
of course, also to eat all the recommended dishes at Restoran Tepi Sungai...
like steamed mantis prawn, broiled baby octopus, deep fried small fish........ and the list goes on~ =D
